The Rotary Club of Calgary North was sponsored by the Calgary Rotary Club in the spring of 1961 during President Merv Cozart's term of office. The founding committee was chaired by Norm Mclean and included, as members, Myrl Courtwright, Ron Jenkins and Ken Broe. The initial get acquainted function hosted by the founding committee was a stag cocktail party held in the Highlander Hotel on March 15, 1961 and was attended by 35 people, including the hosts. The Charter Night was a gala affair held in the Palliser Hotel and attended by 260 people. The meeting was chaired by President Merv Cozart and entertainment was provided by the talented members of the Calgary Club. Forty years ago, I might add, was a time when the Calgary Rotary Clubs' annual president's ball was the highlight of the Calgary entertainment season and our club was truly honored to be hosted and entertained by the downtown club and sponsored by a committee made up of five of the most prominent people in the city at that time. The initial membership of Calgary North totaled thirty-five.  The club has been active in both domestic and international affairs. Over the years the club has provided service to young people, seniors, the handicapped, first-time criminal offenders, in addition to providing aid to the needy, both at home and abroad.
