Speaker Meeting

Speaker Meeting

Monday the weather decided it was time to jettison summer and jump full blast into winter.  Sadly that meant we had a very small turn out for a delicious lunch of pasta with bolognese sauce, good fellowship, an induction, and an inspiring speaker.  President Brian called the meeting to order at 12:15, Jill led us in singing Oh Canada, and Brian gave the invocation.

Our 50-50 draw winner Bob Hansell, who didn't stumble at all as he recited the Four Way Test.  Bob also acted as our Sgt at Arms and elicited several happy bucks and some loonies and toonies to recognize Thanksgiving.

Henry welcomed our guests.

Announcements and Requests

President Brian and Treasurer Henry want us to  ...
remember to pay our dues as soon as we can.  There are still some outstanding payments to be made.
President Brian wants us to ...
know that PEC has reviewed local project and charitable requests and has written cheques in the following amount on our behalf:
Project or Charity Amount
Calgary Drop In And Rehab Centre Society  $   1,485.00
Deaf and Hearing Alberta  $   1,485.00
Calgary Poppy Fund  $   5,214.00
Alberta Cancer Foundation Tom Baker Centre  $      964.00
Salvation Army Agape Hospice  $   5,214.00
Calgary Humane Society  $   5,214.00
St Pius and Polish Community Project  $   5,214.00
University of Saskatchewan College of Engineering  $   1,285.00
Interfaith Food Bank Society  $   7,500.00
Rotary Challenger Park Society  $   5,214.00
   $ 38,789.00

Bud Watson wants us to ...
understand how valuable our contributions to The Paul Harris Foundation are.  The Paul Harris Foundation ensures that our contributions from each member and from the The McNabb, Watson, and Hauser Funds go toward a capital fund which provides enduring income.  That is to say that the earnings from our contributions as a club are given back to us to give back to the community  for charities and projects as you see listed above.  More detail on this is coming from Bud soon.

We had another induction this week.  Jill welcomed Doris Latouche Roland back to Rotary North.

Doris is a past member and past president.  The group welcomed her warmly after a heartfelt induction.

Speaker: Christopher Lawrence on Leaving a Legacy of Meaning

Christopher Lawrence left a corporate position and founded Change My Life Coaching because of his father's influence.  Essentially he wants to serve a cause greater than his own and his work is helping others to do the same.  Christopher's dad began his career painting sticks a fluorescent orange and then worked steadfastly toward learning everything he could about computers, keeping up his knowledge as a computer expert to this day.  In spite of his success, Christopher's dad felt something was missing and changed Christopher's life by saying"I did good work, but I don't know where I made a difference".

As a result, certainly something Christopher has in common with Rotarians is the belief in service over self.  "It is not uncommon for people with successful careers to feel trapped by the golden handcuffs of corporate rewards and the lifestyle it provides", Christopher tells us.  Furthermore, only 17% of the workforce feels fully fulfilled by work.  Most of us need more.

We were encouraged during this inspiring talk to make a positive contribution every single day.  We were also introduced to the Japanese notion of Ikigai , or reason for living, reason for being, a personal purpose.  A well defined purpose for living is usually centered around doing something for someone else.

Having a sense of significance or a feeling of being able to contribute helps us to feel happier, live longer, and live beyond our own lifetime.  Christopher advises us that "the legacy we leave is based on the life we lead."

Next week is Thanksgiving.  Enjoy your long weekend.  We will meet again on Monday, October 16th.

Next Meeting: Monday, October  16th at The Village Park Inn, main floor.
