speaker Meeting

Weekly Stuff

President David Thompson began this first meeting of the 2019-2020 Rotary Year and of his presidency with only about 45 to go.  In the tradition of last year, Dave researched what happened on this day and discovered that Twitter was launched on this day in 2006.  Dave hazarded a guess that no one foresaw Twitter ever being used for political policy.

Things went smoothly with Paul Ramike winning the The Foundation Envelope Draw (happily there were more than usual to choose from) and, without competition from Stephane, Derryl Duncan won the 50-50 draw.  Sheila Newel was Sgt at Arms and introduced our club’s Rotary Wheel of Fortune to three past board members. While Robb was being fined, he received AND ANSWERED a phone call. It was Stephane and Robb held his phone up to the mic so we could say good-bye one last time.  Hopefully the Rotary Wheel sees lots of use in the upcoming weeks.

Linda Pitter attended the meeting and expressed heartfelt thanks for our best wishes during the extremely difficult time she’s been (and is still) going through.  It was wonderful to see her again.

James Fell, author and writer for the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine and many others, told us about his instant success, which occurred over a ten-year period.

After attaining his BA, and a Masters in History and then working as a Marketing Executive, James became interested in writing. First, at age 40, he tried writing a novel but it was terrible.  But he persisted and by writing for newspapers and magazines his income soared from 1,000 a year to 10,000 a year. In spite of the poor pay for writing, James was able to carry on with his writing career thanks to his wife’s stable income as a doctor.

Following Malcolm Gladwell’s model of choosing one topic and taking a really close look at it, James wrote two more books, both non-fiction.  The second book is a result of his epiphany that to date no one has written about the science behind a life changing moments and so his research into transformative experiences became a book called, The Holy Sht Moment.

James Fell’s two books are with Sheila now and will be brought back to the club (along with a brief book report) at the end of the month.
