September 23, 2019

Our September 23rd meeting began with amazing music that could be heard in the VPI lobby and was enjoyed by Rotarians and their guests as they arrived and even while we collected and ate our lunch.   After more than 45 minutes of music, President Dave began the meeting by thanking our guest musicians, Steven (Slava) Klevsky and Manon Mitchell, and by recounting memories of what happened on that date in history.

Our Speaker

David Wartman was our speaker and the coordinator of our entertainment.  David is a Fellow Certified Management Consultant and has served as the Executive Director of the Calgary Civic Symphony since September 2016.

Sometimes called The Civic, The Calgary Civic Symphony is a local orchestra of amateur musicians. Some of the members are professional musicians, music teachers, or former members of the Calgary Philharmonic.  But most members have careers outside of the performing arts.  A love of making music is what brings them together. The 60 to 100 musicians are dedicated to playing a beautiful and diverse mixture of music.

Each year, The Civic presents a series of five concerts, featuring classical works, pop, film, and Christmas favourites.

The Civic is a supporter of music and the arts in Calgary and, therefore, play community shows throughout Calgary and the Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition (RC3), which gives young very talented musicians an opportunity to perform with the orchestra.

The Musicians

Steven was born in Belarus.  He started to study music at the tender age of six and chose the violin after realizing his hands were a bit small for some piano chords for a few years when he did study piano and guitar.  Steven is an accomplished trained musician who teaches music at his own school, plays with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra and The Civic, and had his own band called Millennium.

Manon was born in Montreal and studied the violin since she was nine years old. She was playing the violin in an orchestra by age 12 and playing the clarinet and saxophone in Sea Cadet bands by 13.  Manon performed at the Youth Music Festival in Zurich and expanded the music program at Fern Hill School in Oakville. Currently, in addition to being an active Rotarian, Monon performs with Palladio Music and The Civic.

A book belonging to the club, The Holy Sh*t Moment by James Fell, has been passed on to Connie Sauter along with a new addition to our library, Trust Me I’m Lying by Ryan Holiday, and will be available to others when she is finished them.

Next Meeting

Come back to the meetings, please!  On September 30th we will distribute cheques to our favourite charities (see below), hear from Balint, our exchange student who is languishing here with very little to do, and induct a new member.
