speaker Meeting

President Sheila called the meeting to order @ 12:15; there was a good size crowd of members and friends from Rotary East in attendance.
President Sheila noted that 'today in history' the term Yellow Journalism was coined and came to represent exaggerated sensational stories.  There was a promise of a future speaker on truth in journalism.
The Club members and guests sang, with gusto, Canada's National Anthem.
The invocation was given by Lawrie Fisher; the 50-50 draw was won by Stephan, who nailed the Four Way Test, the Foundation match was won by someone appreciative, and our Sgt @ Arms, Past President Brian, held a great Rotary focused quiz that spared from fines those members getting three or more answers correct.

guest speakers:

Dr Andre Ferland and Steve Menzies

Dr Andre Ferland's "job is keeping people alive".  Dr. Andre Ferland, Clinical Associate Professor, University of Calgary General Internist-Intensivist Medical Director, CV ICU Program Director, and Adult Critical Care Residency Training Program Director.  The most critically ill patients in hospital must be cared for by physicians whose primary commitment is to critical care and this is Dr. Ferland’s area of expertise and passion.
One of the staff helping Dr Ferland keep people alive is Steve Menzies, a Respiratory Therapist and Technologist, who graduate from Xavier University and SAIT.
Both work in Foothills Hospital ICU, a small cramped 18-bed facility, build in 1988, that is run by a truly dedicated staff that helps 1400 people a year.  One of their resources is Extracorporeal Life Support machines.  The ICU has four old machines that are bulky and difficult to work around and move from one spot to another.  The newest machines are considerably advanced technologically and take far less space allowing them to be used right on top of the patient's bed.
It's our hope that we, possibly in partnership with Rotary East, and other clubs can help Foothills ICU acquire more of the new, portable Life Support Systems.

Last but not least

Our meeting ended with not just one smile, but two.

Thanks for attending.  Have a good week.  See you again next Monday for our monthly business meeting and information on some more of this year's initiatives.
