YEX business Meeting

A very good turnout of current and potential members met at the VPI for Southwestern-Mexican fare.  President Elect called the meeting to order at 12:15, Lawrie Fisher gave the invocation, and Jeff led us in singing Oh Canada.

Our 50-50 draw winner was Jim Mukherjee and, not to be outdone, the winner of the foundation draw was Bud Watson, all on the up and up.

Joe Toole did a great off the cuff job of Sgt at Arms.  Henry and Gerry welcomed our guests, which included our inbound and outbound YEX students, a member of the Jamaican Association, prospective members (tall and short), and former District Governor, Garth Toombs.

Announcements and Requests

Jeff Cuell wants us to  ...

remember to attend the Shouldice Park event on Saturday.  Lots of good BBQ food will be available and there will be ample opportunity to enjoy a well organized event celebrating the Mattamy Greenway bicycle path circumnavigating Calgary.

Sheila Newel ...

asked everyone to help out with YEX and Membership as much as they can.

Henry Chorney ...

reminds us there is no meeting next week because of the Labour Day long weekend.  Come back on September 11th, same time, same station, to a meeting chaired by Valerie Mushinski with Dan Doherty as our guest speaker.

David Thompson and Jeff Cuell ...

could use some help and suggestions on potential speakers for our year.

Recognition

Paul Ramikie thanked other members of the International Committee for helping him with his CIP application.

Forgotten from last week: thanks Robb Leibel for giving us a chance to see the eclipse.

YEX Student Presentations

Out-bound student Seaira Constable gave an excellent overview of short history.  She is a Crescent Heights High School student interested in school choir and  drama.  She is headed for Bagheria, a small town in Scilly that was founded in the 17th Century.  Seaira's host family in Bagheria is fond of the theatre, which gives them something in common already.  Also, Seaira has connected electronically with two or three young people in Bagheria, thereby making friends already.  Seaira has two main goals in mind: to become fluent in Italian and to make life long friendships.  We have confidence in her ability to do both.

In-bound student Michele Deiana, also knows as Micki, comes from an area very close to Seaira's destination: Oristan, Sardinia.  He too gave an excellent presentation on his history, family, and hobbies.  Michele is a loyal Italian and, like many other Italians, he supports products made in Italy, including his Vespa, which he rebuild with help from a mechanic.  Michele's English is very good and he looks forward to spending time with his host family, and Rotarians, particularly those whose interests include working on, riding, or talking about motorcycles.  President Brian and Ron Stickley come to mind immediately.

Coming Soon:  Rotary Leadership Institute

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a series of leadership courses offered in three (3) sessions (Modules I, II, III). The courses are designed to provide Rotary knowledge and to develop leadership skills for Rotary’s members. RLI is fun, interactive, and participatory and uses skilled faculty and facilitation techniques to make the experience both valuable and enjoyable. These modules are a wonderful learning opportunity for you to share and explore best management practices while providing a great opportunity for fellowship.
RLI is structured to not only provide new Rotarians with an effective orientation, but also aspiring leaders with an excellent foundation for success.

Please go to the District web site http://www.rotary5360.ca/, hit the “Full Events Calendar” link, toggle to the month of March/April/May, and select “RLI 1, 2 or 3” tab and register.
