business Meeting

President Brian called the meeting to order @ 12:15 with a small but happy and fun group in attendance.

Robb Liebel was, for the first time ever, our Sgt @ Arms.  He took his position seriously and researched the role, discovering that the Sgt @ Arms is responsible for setting the tone of the meeting.  Good job Robb for updating the usual pin and badges fines with some funny fines, including the Green Bin warning for this upcoming week.

Not surprisingly, as you see from the picture below, Sony Carmona won the 50-50 draw.  Some of the winnings clearly went to Peter's Drive In.

Announcements

District 5040's proposal for one of the 2017-18 Presidential Conferences has been approved.  Therefore, Vancouver will host the Feb 9/10 2018.  It is one of six conferences around the World linking the Rotary areas of focus with Peace.

Hotels in Toronto are filling up already for the June 23 to 27 Rotary International Conference.  President Brian Larson urged us all to book lodging now or risk missing our chance.

Friday evening, August 11th, President Brian and Gerry Darichuk were among the group of Alberta Club Presidents to attend an impressive pitch for Calgary to host the 2023, 2024, or 2025 Rotary International Conference.  Both Brian and Gerry voiced how proud they are to be in Rotary and that they have high hopes of the Calgary in one of the three years mentioned.  We will hear about the results in January.

Don't forget to attend The Grand Opening of Mattamy

Parks Foundation Calgary will be celebrating the iconic Rotary/Mattamy Greenway pathway during Canada’s 150th birthday on Saturday September 2, 2017 and we would like you to join us!  There will be food, music, and family activities.

The Greenway is a unique, 138 km continuous pathway encircling the city of Calgary, complete with over 15 different amenities, including dog parks, educational wetland areas, fitness parks and playgrounds.

Mayor Nenshi and other special guests will be there. We hope you can make it.

Guest Speaker

Much to everyone's delight, our two special guests were Sony Carmona, our 2011-2012 exchange student, and her boyfriend Anthony Maniatakis.  Sony brought tears to our eyes as she reminded us of the days she was here as an exchange student, told us about her subsequent educational experience in Toronto, and expressed how much she misses her family in Venezuela.  She thanks Anthony for supporting her through a difficult time.

Sony made us all very proud when she was here 4 years ago and she's doing it again now with her resolve to become educated and through her love of and desire to help her homeland.  She wants to represent the Venezuelan culture well and is accomplishing that as a member of a Venezuelan dance troop in Toronto and as a dedicated student.

Past President: Jeff Cuell
President Elect: Sheila Newel
